Kenyan Athletes Forced to Spend Night on the Floor at Lagos International Airport in Nigeria
Kenyan athletes were forced to spend the night on the floor at Lagos International Airport in Nigeria on Monday.
The runners traveled to the West African country for the African Senior Athletics Championships. After landing at Lagos International Airport at 2pm, the athletes could not get a connecting flight to Asaba, the hosting venue forcing them to spend the night on the floor.
Other teams including Uganda, Morocco and Ivory Coast also got stuck at Lagos after the organizers of the 2018 event got overwhelmed by the arriving visitors.
Although the organizers are to blame for the incident, social media users have questioned why Kenyan authorities traveling with the team could not make arrangements for accommodation in Lagos.
The delegation of 80 Kenyan athletes could still not get a flight on Tuesday morning, with Kenya officials raising concern over the inconvenience.
“Everybody is tired now. We are still waiting for the flight,” Kenya’s head coach Stephen Mwaniki told Daily Nation.
The competition kicks off on Wednesday at 9am with the decathlon’s 100 metres race.
