Robbery with Violence Case Against Former Mungiki Leader Maina Njenga Dropped

A Nairobi court has dropped robbery with violence case against former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga.

On Thursday, trial Magistrate Martha Mutuku acquitted Njenga alongside his five co-accused citing absence of prosecution witnesses.

Magistrate Mutuku noted that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had filed an application seeking discharge of the suspects under section 87(a) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Njenga alongside five others including businessman Francis Mwangi, Wanjohi Ngare and Stephen Kuria were accused of violently robbing three police officers of firearms and cash.

The suspects allegedly committed the offence at Maina Njenga’s Hope Church at Thome Estate in Kasarani area, Nairobi in 2011. 

Njenga and his co-accused allegedly held the police officers for several hours in one of the rooms at the church and forcefully took away guns and cash from them. They were also accused of damaging a government vehicle.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges and have been out on cash bails of Sh200,000 each.
