Governor Mike Sonko Confesses to Owning Illegal Land in Nairobi

Governor Mike Sonko has confessed to owning illegal land in Nairobi's Buru Buru estate.

Speaking on Thursday, Sonko said his administration is committed to bringing down all structures constructed on riparian land, road reserves and public land.

Sonko hailed the ongoing demolitions of structures sitting on wetlands by the National Environment Management Authority (Nema), stating that no property will be spared including that of the rich.

Sonko said the demolition will begin with the wall erected around his one-acre land in Buru Buru, which he admitted is partly on a road reserve.

“Even myself, there is a land I bought in Buru Buru. About an acre of that land is part of road access and we shall start by demolishing that wall. It does not matter how well connected you are, if you have built on a road reserve or water ways, that structure has to go down,” said Sonko on Thursday.

Sonko listed proposed land for Gigiri and Ruaraka fire stations, Highridge Hospital in parklands, new Muthaiga Thigiri Ridge County dispensary and nursery school, Pumwani Hospital expansion structures, Eastleigh county Market and Wariro county market as some of properties earmarked for demolition by Nairobi County government.

“Better be a one term governor and leave a legacy than entertaining grabbing of public land/utilities. Remove all your valuables from the under mentioned public utilities with immediate effect,” Sonko said.
