Uhuru Kenyatta to Meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing

John Wanjohi Aug 31, 2018

President Uhuru Kenyatta is this weekend expected to travel to China where he will attend the China-Africa forum that will take place from September 1st to 5th.

During the trip, Kenyatta is also scheduled to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

His meeting with Xi Jinping comes in the wake of similar meetings with United States President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, DC and British Prime Minister Theresa May at State House, Nairobi.

In Beijing, the Head of State will witness the signing of a Sh380 billion deal for the funding of phase 2B of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Kisumu. The deal will push the total cost of the ambitious project to Sh800 billion.

“The Mombasa-Nairobi phase cost Sh327 billion, the extension to Naivasha cost Sh150 billion and the final phase will cost Sh380 billion,” Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said last month.

Following Kenyatta-Trump meeting, the White House said a deal for construction of Sh300 billion expressway between Nairobi and Mombasa by American engineering firm Bechtel had been agreed.

After talks with British PM May in Nairobi on Thursday, Uhuru announced Kenya and UK signed a deal for return of proceeds of corruption and crime stashed in UK.

“We need to make it painfully unrewarding, and expensive to get into corruption,” President Uhuru noted at State House.

May also announced that 20 new British companies will set shop in Kenya.
