Kenyan Authorities Ask Immigrants to Walk with their Identification Documents as Crackdown Intensifies
The government has refuted claims that the ongoing crackdown on illegal immigrants in the country is targeted on specific nationalities.
In a statement on Saturday, the National Police Service said the operation is a multi-agency exercise aimed at repatriating immigrants found in the country without proper documentation.
"The National Police Service wishes to inform the public that the ongoing operation to repatriate undocumented immigrants from the Country is a multi-agency effort that does not target nationals of any particular country," the National Police Service said in a statement.
The agency further urged foreigners in the country to always carry their identification documents to avoid finding themselves in trouble with authorities.
"In supporting the concerned agencies to enforce immigration laws, Police wishes to advise foreign nationals that they must always carry with them the necessary identification documents for inspection,if and when they are required to produce them by the Police or other relevant members of the multi agency team."
Earlier this week, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i said the crackdown on illegal foreigners will be done in a manner that meets international standards.
“The Ministry of Interior has assured that it will not target a single nationality…” he said in a statement.
