John Wanjohi Sep 02, 2018

Police in Nairobi have arrested five Nigerian citizens as the crackdown on illegal immigrants continues across the country.

The five foreigners were arrested at an apartment in Nairobi's Lucky Summer estate for being the in the country illegally.

Police said the immigrants were nabbed after locals reported that they were engaging in illegal activities. They will be arraigned in court on Monday.

The latest arrests brings the total number of foreigners arrested in the operation to more than 200 even as the government maintains the swoop will continue amid protests from right groups.

Last week, Amnesty International warned that the operation to flush out illegal immigrants from the country might spark xenophobia.

The agency particularly expressed concerns over the hotline number launched by the Immigration Department for Kenyans to report suspicious foreign nationals.

"This approach is likely to ignite xenophobia against foreign workers, refugees and asylum seekers," said Seif Magango, Amnesty International's deputy director for East Africa.

On Saturday, the National Police Service urged foreigners in the country to always carry their identification documents to avoid getting in trouble with authorities.
