'The Office is Dirty': Governor Mike Sonko Speaks Out on Why He Runs Nairobi from His Home in Machakos

John Wanjohi Sep 13, 2018

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has opened up on why he no longer operates from his designated office based at City Hall.

Sonko has been running Nairobi County from his rural home in Mua Hills, Machakos County for the past few months, a move that has not been taken well by city leaders led by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).

The flamboyant Governor now says that his office at City Hall in Nairobi is 'dirty' and not safe for him. He said he will only work from there if the place is cleaned.

“I have got my own reasons why sometimes I don’t go to my office. If there are bills to be assented to, I just come to the speaker’s office and I sign. I go to the office of Majority leader and I sign or to one of my CEC’s offices and I sign,” Sonko said as quoted by The Star.

He added: “I know the dirtiness in my office. I have to deal with this first and clean all the seats, pour out water in the refrigerator, clean the cups before I go back. Otherwise I can go there and by just biting my nail, I collapse and die.”

Sonko's claims come days after Ward Representatives gave him 14 days to return to the City Hall office. They threatened to impeach him if he continues to run Nairobi from another County but Sonko has dared them to go ahead with the plans.

“When I had a problem with some officers of the national government, they are the people who came for me in Mua. So they cannot tell me not to operate from Mua yet they are the people who came for me there,” he said.
