Migori Governor Obado Arrested over Killing of University Student Sharon Otieno

John Wanjohi Sep 21, 2018

Detectives on Friday morning arrested Migori Governor Okoth Obado over the murder of Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.

The Governor was taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road in Nairobi where he was interrogated for several hours.

The arrest comes a day after DNA tests confirmed that Obado fathered the seven-month-old unborn baby boy who was in Sharon's womb before they were both killed.

"There is a 99.99+% chance that Zacharia Okoth Obado is the biological father of the donor of the DNA generated from the foetus that is Sharon Otieno’s child,” the DNA statement reads as quoted by Daily Nation.

Officers said they have marked Governor Obado as a person of interest in the case alongside his wife Hellen.

The lifeless body of the 26-year-old second-year student was found in a thicket close to Kodera Forest in Homa Bay on September 4th, two days after she was kidnapped from a hotel in Rongo town together with Daily Nation journalist Barrack Oduor.

Although Governor Obado has confirmed he was in an affair with Sharon, he has denied any involvement in her killing.

“As a law abiding citizen, I want to state here very clearly that I have nothing… and absolutely nothing… to do with the cruel death of Sharon,” stated the embattled Governor during a press address last Wednesday.

Sharon was stabbed eight times and succumbed to excessive bleeding, an autopsy report revealed.

Four suspects including Michael Oyamo, the personal assistant to Governor Obado and former Member of Homa Bay County Assembly (MCA) Lawrence Mula have been apprehended in connection with Ms Otieno's murder.
