Protestors Demand for Release of Embattled Migori Governor Okoth Obado
Supporters of Migori Governor Governor Okoth Obado on Sunday staged protests demanding he be released from police custody.
Governor Obado was arrested on Friday and was grilled for several hours at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi.
He has been spending the weekend at Gigiri Police Station before being arraigned in court on Monday where will be charged over the killing of Rongo University Student Sharon Otieno.
The demonstrators, who took to the streets of Uriri town, demanded the Governor's release saying that the murder charges against him are politically instigated.
"We want our governor to be released on bond," a protestor by the name Michael Omollo said.
Obado was arrested a day after DNA tests confirmed that he fathered the seven-month-old unborn baby boy who was in the 26-year-old student's womb before she was brutally killed.
"There are 99.99+% more chances that Zacharia Okoth Obado is the biological father of the donor of the DNA generated from the foetus that is Sharon Otieno’s child,” the DNA statement reads as quoted by Daily Nation.
The Governor confirmed that he was in a love relationship with Sharon but denied any role in her murder.
“As a law abiding citizen, I want to state here very clearly that I have nothing… and absolutely nothing… to do with the cruel death of Sharon,” stated the embattled Governor during a press address.
The victim was stabbed eight times and died as a result of excessive bleeding.
