I'm Still Fighting for You, Raila Assures Supporters

John Wanjohi Sep 24, 2018

I haven't abandoned you, Opposition leader Raila Odinga has assured his supporters as he downplays claims that he has joined oppressors.

Speaking in Kisumu on Monday, Odinga defended his decision to back the 8 percent Value Added Tax (V.A.T) on petroleum products and other taxes proposed by President Kenyatta in the Finance Bill, 2018.

“I have been at the forefront in advocating for the rights of Kenyans, and so I would not agree to something I know would burden the people,” said Odinga.

He continued: “For many years I spoke to these people (Jubilee government) but they refused to listen… they said I was lying and told me to go back to the village and dig. I told them that if they took too many loans without proper investments then it would come back to burden them.”

Odinga explained that he only agreed to support President Uhuru's proposals with specific conditions as the leader of opposition.

“We decided to support the VAT on the condition that such budgets as for leaders going to watch football in Russia, traveling First/Business Class and going for bench marking and bonding trips in Arusha must be cut down,” Raila who spoke during event organised by Unaitas Sacco said.

“Leaders who get into the government without much and one day later are already fatter must also be done away with.”
