Family Seeks to Raise Sh1 Million for Slain Rongo University Student Sharon Otieno's Funeral

Slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno will be laid to rest on October 19th in Homa Bay County, her family has announced.

Speaking to journalists, Sharon's funeral committee chairman Elijah Opiyo said the family is seeking to raise Sh1 million to cater for burial expenses including feeding mourners.

The family had last month vowed not to bury the 26-year-old student until her killers are arrested and prosecuted. The seven-month-old unborn baby that was in her womb during the gruesome killing was buried three weeks ago.

Migori Governor Okoth Obado, who was charged with her murder, confirmed that he had a romantic relationship with Sharon and the baby was his. He however denied having any role in the murder of the second-year student.

The deceased's remains, which are being preserved at Kirindo Hospital mortuary in Mbita will be buried at her grandfather’s home in Magare Village, Homa Bay County.

Opiyo said the burial committee has held several meetings to ensure that Sharon is given a decent sendoff. He also noted that they are expecting a high number of people to attend the ceremony.

“We have not hit the target to cater for the burial expenses and we are appealing to well-wishers to assist us,” Opiyo said.

Migori Governor Obado remains in custody after the court denied him bail even as as investigations continue.
