Parents of Murder Suspect Joe Irungu Speak Out, Say Their Son is a Staunch Christian and Member of Church Choir

John Wanjohi Oct 09, 2018

The parents of murder suspect Joseph Irungu, alias Jowie, have spoken for the first time since their son was arrested in connection to the gruesome murder of business lady Monica Kimani.

Speaking to NTV, Jowie's parents painted their son as a man raised in a humble background and in a Christian family. The two said there is no way he could have been involved in the killing of Ms Kimani.

"We brought him up in Church and he was a Church person," the father said.

“I have asked him severally and he has told me he never did it. He was not involved in the murder. According to the way we brought him up because we are Christians, I feel terrible and sympathise with the family of Monica,” says the father who declined to be named.

He further confirmed that his son worked in Dubai and dismissed other stories that have been reported about his son as fabricated.

“I know that he was working in Dubai. I don’t know anything about Afghanistan and everything else being said about him. I only see it on TV. He told me he was doing security work in Dubai,” says the dad.

He also refuted claims that Irungu attempted to commit suicide by shooting himself, noting that if he wanted to kill himself, he would have shot himself on other crucial body parts and not on the arm. He said he was with his son at Kijabe hospital where he was treated.

“He was admitted. I was the one carrying the discharge sheet going to the pharmacy and paying the bills…if anyone disputes that, everything is computerized nowadays you can’t hide this information,” says the dad.

He admitted that Irungu and Monica were friends and used to chat through phone because they attended the same school.

Speaking to the same station, his Jowie's said their son called them to inform them that he had been shot and rushed to Kijabe Hospital. She said Jowie was raised in Christian standards and was an active member of the church choir as well as a God-fearing man.

The parents also said Jowie had informed that he was engaged to Citizen TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, but that they had not met her in person.

The mother said they have been stigmatized by friends following the arrest of their son, to an extend of being branded as a family of killers.
