I'm Not Quitting Politics, Raila Says

John Wanjohi Nov 04, 2018

Opposition leader Raila Odinga says he will not quit local politics despite landing a top diplomatic job at the African Union (AU).

Odinga ,who was appointed as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, says his new role will not stop him from actively participating in local politics since he will mainly operate from his office in Nairobi.

"I am going nowhere. My new appointment as AU envoy comes with an office in Nairobi, Kenya. I will just be travelling to Ethiopia, South Africa, among other African nations, on assignment and returning to the office in Nairobi, where I will be based," he says.

His remarks come after a section of leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto urged the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader to retire and focus on his new role at the AU.

"I want our people to engage in healthy politics that enhances development," says Odinga.

His elder brother and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP, Oburu Oginga says Odinga will not be quitting politics any time soon.

"He (Raila) is there to stay. Those who think he will retire soon are simply daydreaming. Everyone ages day by day. Raila cannot be old if Oburu is not because I am older than him. He is just my follower," notes Oginga.
