Government Bans Marie Stopes from Conducting Abortions in Kenya

John Wanjohi Nov 19, 2018

The government through the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) has banned Marie Stopes from conducting abortions in Kenya.

In a letter to the international reproductive health clinic, KMPDB Chief Executive Daniel Yumbya has further warned the organization against publishing misleading information on its website.

"Marie Stopes is directed to pull down the misleading information on its website and any other information channels with immediate effect and ensure that any future information shall conform with the provision of the KMPDB and Advertising Rules,” reads the letter.

The clinic has also been ordered to file a report of their reviewed guidelines to conform to the law within the next two months.

Marie Stopes has also been barred from running adverts that breach the Public Health Facilities Advertising Rules, 2016.

The board says the decision has been taken after complaints filed against the organization by Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) CEO Ezekiel Mutua and CitizenGo Africa Campaign Manager Ann Kioko.

"Marie Stopes Kenya is hereby directed to immediately cease and desist offering any form of abortion services in all its facilities within the republic,” the board says.

Marie Stopes is an international non-governmental organization that offers free contraception and safe abortion services in 37 countries across the globe.
