US Pursues Kenyan Cabinet Secretary, Governor Linked to Akashas Drug Trafficking Web

John Wanjohi Nov 22, 2018

US authorities have reportedly written to Kenya over ongoing investigations against high ranking Kenyan individuals linked to the Akashas drug trafficking syndicate.

Daily Nation reports that a Cabinet Secretary and a serving Governor are among more than 10 prominent Kenyans on the US Department of Justice's radar.

10 out of the persons named in the US list are marked as highly culpable in the transnational drug trafficking web and their names are contained in highly secretive documents only accessed by top American and Kenyan enforcement officials.

"They are among the most culpable as far as the drug trafficking charges are concerned," a judicial source privy to the matter discloses to Daily Nation.

"Local prosecutors are prepared to deal with any request from their US counterparts. The requests from Washington are expected by mid-December (2018)," the source adds.

Other prominent Kenyans in the list include a vocal Rift Valley MP, a prosecutor, two High Court judges, two magistrates and a senior criminal investigations officer.

Also being investigated is a former Minister, a serving MP from Mt Kenya, former MP from North Eastern, prominent Nairobi businessman and a Mombasa-based human rights activist.

Last month, the Akasha brothers; Ibrahim and Baktash pleaded guilty to six counts related to drug trafficking including distribution of heroin and conspiracy to smuggle drugs into the US.
