DPP Noordin Haji Speaks on Prominent Kenyans Linked to Akashas Drugs Web by the US
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji says his office will fully cooperate with United States authorities investigating more than 10 prominent Kenyans linked to Akashas drug trafficking syndicate.
Speaking to Daily Nation, the Chief Prosecutor says he knows the identities of the Kenyans named in the international drug web led by the Kenya's Akasha family.
Haji notes that they can only reveal the names of the individuals after request by the US. "We are privy to the investigations. We know the individuals but we have to wait for the request from the US before naming anyone," says Haji.
Haji further explains that the decision on whether those implicated in the illegal business will be tried in the US or locally will be made once consultations are made between Kenya and American agencies.
"We have not completed the process between us and the US," says Haji.
He at the same time assured that the incriminated individuals will legally be extradited to the US if a decision is made that they be charged in New York.
“The reason extraordinary measures were taken with the Akashas was the constant frustration. But at this point, the Kenyan government will co-operate. We will try our best to ensure the law is followed,” Haji notes.
Among those linked to the Akashas drug racket are said to include a Cabinet Secretary, a Governor, a top lawyer, a prosecutor, a senior detective, two judges, and two magistrates.
Last month, the Akasha brothers - Ibrahim and Baktash - pleaded guilty to seven charges related to drug smuggling and corruption at a court in New York. They await sentencing.
