Tuk Tuk Driver Videotaped Stoning Kenyan Traffic Police Officers Speaks Out
A Tuk Tuk driver videotaped stoning two traffic police officers has explained why he took the action.
Speaking with The Standard, the man who sought anonymity, says he was only defending himself after the two officers attacked him for no reason.
Thetuk tuk operator says the cops stopped him before smashing his car's side mirrors and windscreen.
“The officers had stopped two other tuk tuks and I could see them receive money. They saw me approach and one signalled me to stop,” he says.
He further claims that the two officers attacked him after he demanded to know why they vandalized his Tuk Tuk.
“I got annoyed and demanded to be given answers, as they tried to intimidate me, saying there was nothing I could do to them,” the driver says.
The father of one, who is now in hiding, says he could not control his anger after the officers vandalized the car, which is the only source of income for his family.
“I decided enough was enough and had to fight what I believed to be unjust and unfair cops who were intimidating me because they were in Government uniform. We exchanged blows and after I overpowered them, they picked stones and hurled at me."
“I had to get into my tuk tuk and try to confuse them by changing direction. I completely lost my mind because of the injustice, which was being meted on me by police officers whose interest was the bribe,” he explains.
He says he was ferrying three passengers to Nakuru town when the incident happened.
The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has warned Kenyans against attacking police officers after two videos showing members of the public attack police officers went viral on social media.
“IPOA strongly condemns these attacks….With a serving Police Service and a robust Judiciary in place, it is unacceptable for anyone to take the law into their own hands,” the agency says in a statement.
