Police are searching for a social media user who posted an inciting tweet about Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.

In a post that has gone viral online, the user identified as Dennis Kiptoo says there will be ethnic clashes worse than the 2007/2008 post-poll chaos should a particular community fail to vote for Ruto in 2022.

Kiptoo says the community must “pay their debt” failure to which members of the ethnic group will be evicted from the Rift Valley region.

The National Police Service says it is working with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to ensure the suspect faces the consequences.

"Our attention has been drawn to some tweets supposedly issued by individual issuing threats to ignite inter-ethnic clashes akin to what occurred in 2007/8 in parts of the country," police say in a tweet.

"Let it be known to all that we are taking these threats as a serious matter, and that we are working with the NCIC with a view to dealing with the persons involved in accordance with the law."

Kiptoo's reckless tweet has sparked outrage from Kenyan social media users who are demanding for his arrest.

“This is the most irresponsible utterance and must be condemned in the strongest terms possible,” former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo says in a tweet.
