Nairobi Court Frees One Westgate Mall Terror Suspect, Puts Three Others on Defense

A Nairobi court has ruled that three of the four suspects accused of being behind the terror attack on Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall in 2013 have a case to answer.

The four suspects; Mohammed Ahmed Abdi, Liban Abdullah, Adnan Ibrahim, and Hussein Hassan are accused of masterminding the September 21st, 2013 attack where 67 people lost their lives and more than 100 others injured.

In his ruling on Monday, Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi says that the prosecution has a strong case against three of the accused and freed the fourth suspect.

Those with a case to answer are Ahmed Abdi, Liban Abdullah, and Hussein Mustafa, while Adnan Ibrahim has been acquitted.

The four had been charged with conspiracy to commit terrorism, aiding terrorist groups and being in Kenya illegally among others.

Their trial began on January 15th, 2014 and over 145 witnesses have testified against the accused persons. The case will be mentioned on January 21st, 2019.

Somalia-based terror organization, Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack.
