FBI Detectives Join Probe into Tuesday's Nairobi Terror Attack
Officers from the US' Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have joined the ongoing probe into a terror attack that was staged at dusitD2 complex along 14 Riverside Drive in Westlands, Nairobi.
The Star reports that the FBI officers are working in collaboration with detectives from Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and other international agencies.
Already, detectives have arrested two prime suspects in connection with the attack. One of them was arrested in Ruaka area, Kiambu County while the other was nabbed in Nairobi's Eastleigh estate on Wednesday.
“Subsequent investigations by the DCI have yielded arrest of two key suspects believed to have facilitated the attack and are in custody assisting Police with the investigations,” Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet says.
The death toll from the attack has risen to 21 after six more bodies were retrieved from the scene while one police officer, who was involved in the rescue mission, succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.
The fatalities include 16 Kenyans, one British national, one United States citizen and three persons of African descent whose identities are yet to be established.
Somalia-based Islamic terror organization, Al-Shabaab, which claimed responsibility for the attack, says the attack was in retaliation to the United States President Donald Trump’s action to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli's capital.
"The Mujahideen (holy warriors) carried out this operation … (as) a response to the witless remarks of U.S. president, Donald Trump, and his declaration of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of Israel" the extremist group says in a statement as quoted by Reuters.
