Nairobi Residents Want Governor Mike Sonko Declared Unfit to Hold Office over Bhang Smoking Confession

A group of Nairobi residents has filed a petition in court seeking to have Governor Mike Sonko declared unfit to hold public office.

The group argues that Governor Sonko admitted to smoking bhang- a banned narcotic substance in Kenya.

In a recent interview, Sonko claimed he used to smoke marijuana together with his Kiambu counterpart Ferdinand Waititu in a toilet during their days in the 10th Parliament.

"He (Waititu) used to smoke a lot of bhang when he was an MP, I'm a witness to this, we used to go to a certain toilet there... we used to smoke a lot of bhang with this guy," Sonko said in the interview.

He added: "He was hiding bhang in the socks.. he rolls so many... I'm a witness... I'm not smoking anymore him he's still smoking as the governor of Kiambu."

The petitioners also present that Sonko admitted to previously being imprisoned in three detention centers; Shimo la Tewa, Industrial Area remand prison and Kamiti maximum security prison for various crimes, including fraud.

In their view, these are enough reasons to declare him unsuitable to hold office since he contravened article 73 of the Constitution on leadership and integrity.

They further argue that his stay in office breaches article 181 of the constitution on the eligibility of a Governor.
