Police Launch Hunt for 130 Suspects Accused of Stealing Millions of Shillings from Banks through Hacking

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has on Wednesday released photos of 130 suspects who are wanted by authorities in connection with electronic fraud and hacking of banking systems.

DCI George Kinoti says warrants of arrest against the suspects have been issued and has urged members of the public to share information about the suspects.

The suspects are accused of stealing millions of shillings from banks and other financial institutions, sometimes in conspiracy with insiders. Their photos have been circulated in the daily newspapers.

“Any person with information to contact DCI headquarters -ECCU section, the nearest police station, call or SMS 0772 627 435, 020 334 3412, 020 286 1097 or email us on eccu-cyber@outlook.com,” DCI Kinoti appeals.

Police records show financial institutions lost a staggering Sh17 billion to the fraudsters in 2016, down from Sh14 billion in 2015. Last year, the National Bank of Kenya admitted to losing Sh29 million after their systems were hacked.

“The suspects listed here are wanted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by CM’s court Kiambu/CM’s court Milimani on January 24th, 2019,” the DCI notes.
