Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho Writes to Interpol over Drug Trafficking Allegations

John Wanjohi Feb 04, 2019

Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has reportedly written to the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) seeking clarifications over reports that he is wanted for drug trafficking.

The Standard reports that Joho has written to the organization through his lawyer DBM Mosota.

Joho wants Interpol to confirm whether reports that he is among nine individuals being sought by the France-based organization over drugs business are authentic.

He says his letter is informed by a statement dated November 10th, 2018, purportedly from the organization, listing him among drugs fugitives.

Lawyer Mosota says the said statement has negatively impacted on his client's political career and that Interpol's silence on the subject has caused more damage.

“This has caused irreparable damage and will continue to do so if there is no official confirmation from your office on the authenticity or lack thereof of the said statement and notice,” Joho's letter reads in part.

“It is, therefore, in our client’s interests, the interests of all residents of the county of Mombasa and the nation as a whole that your office informs us on the authenticity or lack thereof of the statement."

“The circulation of statements or notices without any form of verification of the authenticity of such statements prejudices our client’s credibility in refuting the claims publicly as well as the credibility of any subsequent communique from Interpol,” he argues.

This comes a day after Joho demanded an apology from four Jubilee politicians who linked him to the narcotics trade.

He has threatened to sue the four if they fail to apologize within 24 hours. The four are Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, MPs Kimani Ichung'wa (Kikuyu) Didmus Barasa (Kimilili) and Oscar Sudi (Kapseret).
