Detectives Raid Tourism CS Najib Balala's Homes over Sh100 Million Scandal
Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have raided the homes of Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala in connection with an alleged Sh100 million scandal.
The Standard reports that crucial documents have been recovered during the raid carried out at Balala's homes in Nairobi, Kilifi, and Mombasa.
EACC says that Balala is being investigated over Sh100 million contract awarded illegally in 2017.
Balala has been asked to table tender documents, invoices and payment vouchers on the legality of the contract awarded to a company to offer unspecified services during an expo held in Nairobi two years ago.
Initial investigations revealed that the company was not among the pre-qualified firms during the tendering process.
The anti-graft body has raised questions on how the firm was awarded the contract without following the stipulated laws.
EACC has since summoned Balala to appear before the agency's offices on Monday, February 18th over the irregular contract given to the American Society of Travel Agents Kenya.
“The commission is conducting investigations into allegations of an irregular award of a contract to ASTA Kenya for hosting of ASTA 2017 Destination Expo Conference and further sponsorship of Ksh.100M for the conference,” reads the summons.
“To facilitate our investigation, you are kindly invited for interview and statement recording at our Integrity Center offices on 18th February 2019 at 9.00am.”
