Gov't Speaks on Letter Linking Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho to Drug Trafficking
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has broken silence on the alleged investigation against Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho in connection with drug trafficking.
In a statement, the DCI says that reports claiming that the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) is pursuing Governor Joho over drug trade are fake.
A letter that has been shared online and purported to have been released by Interpol claimed that Joho is among leaders being sought by the international agency over involvement in the illicit trade.
Responding to Joho's lawyers who had sought to establish the authenticity of the letter, the DCI has advised the Governor to take legal actions against those linking him to the trade of narcotics.
"Since we may not go far in investigating the origin of the forged letter in the social media, please take civil remedies for those spreading the malicious rumors," the letter signed by John Kariuki and copied to DPP Noordin Haji reads.
Joho has sued Nandi Governor Stephen Sang', MPs Oscar Sudi (Kapseret) Kimani Ichung'wa (Kikuyu) and Didimus Baraza (Kimilili) for linking him to drug trafficking.
He argues that the statements made by the four leaders have tainted his reputation and may negatively affect his political career.
“The defendants were motivated not only by extreme malice but also by other ulterior motives knowing very well Joho would probably contest future elections and indeed, the highest political leadership in the Republic of Kenya,” Joho says in papers filed in court.
