David Murathe Hires Lawyer James Orengo in Bid to Block Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 Presidential Bid

Former Jubilee party vice-chairperson David Murathe is set to move to the court in a bid to block Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 presidential bid.

Speaking to The Star, Murathe says he has contracted the services of senior counsel James Orengo to seek Constitutional Court's advisory on the eligibility of Ruto to run for President in the next election.

Murathe says Orengo will file the petition alongside senior counsel John Khaminwa.

"We are not going to the Supreme Court. Instead, we are going to the Constitutional Court first," states Murathe.

Murathe says the team will be seeking to convince the court that the President and Deputy President positions are conjoined, meaning that Ruto has already exhausted the two-term limit stipulated by the Constitution.

"Article 147 has been invoked by Kenyatta during his first term. This happened in October 2014 when the President appointed Ruto as the acting President for three days while he attended the status conference at the International Criminal Court."

"Indeed, the apex of the executive arm of Kenya's government is entitled 'The Presidency' which comprises both the President and the Deputy President," Murathe adds.

Early this year, Murathe resigned as the governing party's vice-chair and vowed to use all means to stop Ruto from ascending to power.
