John Wanjohi Mar 23, 2019

Police in Mombasa have launched an investigation into a reported case of suicide by a Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) employee.

The aerodrome control officer died on the spot after reportedly jumping from the air traffic control tower at the Mombasa International Airport on Friday.

KCAA Director-General Gilbert Kibe has confirmed the incident in a statement sent to newsrooms.

“The family of the deceased was informed and our pertinent officers are working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the incident. Staff on duty and those affected will undergo counseling sessions to cope with the loss and grief,” says Kibe.

Kibe further says KCAA staff members will be taken through counseling following the incident.

Kibe says the air traffic control department has "lost a valuable member of the team."

"The board and management stand with air control officers during this time, having lost a valuable member of the team," Kibe says.

The body of the unnamed KCAA officer has since been taken to Agha Khan Hospital Mortuary in Mombasa.
