Over 2,000 Kenyan Doctors Deregistered for Flouting Regulations
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (KMPDB) has deregistered 2275 medical practitioners for flouting regulations.
The regulator says the 2,063 doctors and 212 dentists drawn from both the public and private health sector have been delisted for failing to comply with Section 14 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act.
The affected medical practitioners failed to apply to be retained on the register as required by industry regulations.
KMPDB has made the decision following a meeting on March 29th, where the board resolved to strike out names of non- compliant practitioners from the register.
“We did not take the action out of malice. The doctors and dentists knew about the requirements and were given ample time to comply, but they simply failed to do so without giving us reasons. We have no option but to let the law take its course,” the Board says.
The public can access the list of delisted doctors and dentists on the board's website.
The deregistered medics must reapply for their annual retention for them to be reinstated.
Kenyan doctors must have a license from the board to be allowed to offer treatment to patients or operate medical facilities.
Cases of quack doctors in the health industry have been on the rise in recent years with the most recent case being that of Mugo Wa Wairimu, who was arrested late last year for running an illegal clinic in Nairobi.
