Retired President Daniel Arap Moi's first-born son, Jonathan has passed away in Nakuru at the age of 66.

Moi's Press Secretary Lee Njiru says Jonathan succumbed to cancer at a hospital in Nakuru, Citizen Digital reports.

“I have been asked by the Moi family to tell Kenyans to respect their privacy at this mourning period of their beloved kin,” says Njiru.

Jonathan's brother, Senator Gideon Moi has described the safari rally enthusiast as a social, industrious and down-to-earth person.

“Jonathan will be remembered for his daring exploits in the racing tracks, in muddy and dusty tracks, during this time of Easter,” says Gideon Moi in a statement.

“We are distraught as a family and we ask for your prayers and seek your understanding and indulgence to allow us to mourn privately.”

Jonathan has stayed away from the public limelight since he unsuccessfully run for Eldama Ravine parliamentary seat in 2002.

He chose to focus on running his businesses in the agriculture, real estate, and insurance sectors.

His love for Safari Rally saw him participate in several competitions.

He was the first-born son to former President Moi and his late wife Lena.

His siblings are Gideon, Jennifer, John Mark, Raymond, Philip, June, and Doris.
