Speculation as President Kenyatta, Odinga Hold Private Meetings in Dubai

John Wanjohi May 01, 2019

President Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga are reported to have held secret talks in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The two leaders traveled to Dubai on Saturday after attending the second Belt and Road forum in Beijing, China.

Kenyatta was scheduled to travel to Riyadh to hold talks with Saudi Arabian government officials but the trip was canceled.

“Half of those the President was going to engage are preparing for Ramadhan. We will, therefore, reschedule the visit,” State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita told The Standard.

The publication reports that Kenyatta and Odinga held secret meetings at a top hotel in the Arab nation, where most of their aides were locked out.

It is not clear what the two discussed during the three days they were in Dubai.

The two arrived in the country separately on Tuesday, with Odinga landing first at JKIA.

“We don’t know what they were discussing, but they met many times,” said an official.

The relationship between the two has continued to blossom since their historic handshake in March last year.

Recently, Kenyatta rubbished claims that the handshake was about 2022 succession politics.

“We have just been talking about issues affecting our people. If its infrastructure, what do we need to do? We discuss and we support each other,” noted Uhuru

“We sit; we discuss; we agree. He (Raila) also gives me ideas that enhance something and make it even better. What is wrong with that?”
