Construction of Sh51 Billion Double-Decker Road from JKIA Begins in September

John Wanjohi May 02, 2019

Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia says the construction of a double-decker road linking the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to Nairobi CBD and Nairobi-Nakuru highway will begin in September.

Macharia says the construction of the Sh51 billion state-of-the-art expressway will be done by a Chinese engineering company, China Road and Bridge Corporation.

The project will be completed within two years and is expected to ease traffic flow along Mombasa Road.

Motorists using the expressway will pay toll charges to help the firm building the road to recoup its investment but those using the lower section of the double-decker highway will do so for free.

“Road construction will commence in September 2019, and will take two years to complete,” says Macharia.

Among the features on the new road are the bus rapid transit (BRT) lanes dedicated for large-capacity buses.

The overpass will be constructed in three phases starting with the first 6.5 kilometers from JKIA to Likoni Road.

The second stretch will cover 12 kilometers from Likoni Road to James Gichuru Road junction on Waiyaki Way, while the last section will connect James Gichuru Road to Rironi, on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
