No More Opening of New Universities, Education CS George Magoha Declares

John Wanjohi May 07, 2019

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has suspended the establishment of new public universities in the country.

Speaking on Monday during a forum on University Education, CS Magoha argues that there is no reason why the country should have many institutions of higher learning offering the same programs.

“Why do you have to duplicate courses? Where this university is doing law, the other is doing the same.  We cannot establish new universities that will only duplicate courses offered in existing ones,” declares Magoha.

“I have received requests to increase the number of universities… you must apply the brakes."

Magoha further asserts that there are many public universities that are not sustainable. CS Magoha has also told Vice Chancellors that the government will no longer allocate funds to universities.

“Stop dreaming and thinking that the government is going to give you money. It will not,” he notes.

Last month, Prof. Magoha threatened to shut down universities that are teaching irrelevant courses.

“I might be forced to shut some public universities this year and send some lecturers home. We cannot continue having irrelevant courses in our institutions that no single student has chosen for years,” stated Magoha.
