Shalom Hospital Shut Down After 7-Month-Old Baby's Death

John Wanjohi May 06, 2019

Shalom Hospital in Machakos has been closed following the death of a seven-month-old baby on Sunday.

The child, Ethan Muendo, passed away hours after staff at the facility administered a lethal injection to him to relieve the pain of a minor scalding

In a statement on Monday, Governor Alfred Mutua says the Machakos county government has withdrawn the facility's trading license.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDP) has also revoked the hospital's operating permit.

The medical board says the injection administered to the boy was an overdose.

Unconfirmed reports indicate the person who administered the lethal jab is not a trained medical practitioner but a patient attendant.

The hospital’s management has been ordered to clear with all patients before Monday at 6 pm.

Governor Mutua has also directed the immediate arrest of the facility's owner, administrator, and staff.

The private hospital has found itself on the spot for all the wrong reasons in recent weeks.

Last month, the facility was on the spot after a woman gave birth on the floor in a case of suspected negligence. Nurses allegedly watched and enjoyed their tea as the woman suffered.
