Kenyans Online Gutted as Plan to Raise President Uhuru, Ruto Salaries is Revealed

John Wanjohi May 09, 2019

President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto are set to earn higher salaries and allowances beginning in June this year.

Quoting National Treasury documents, Business Daily reports that the two leaders are set to get a pay rise of 3.9 percent.

The increase will see their combined annual basic salary and allowance budget grow to Sh38 million from the current Sh36.6 million.

The Sh38 million consists of an allowance package amounting to Sh15.2 million while salaries add up to Sh22.8 million.

The pay rise comes two years after Kenyatta, Ruto and other top government officials took a pay cut of 3.9 percent in a bid to curb the bloated wage bill.

This reduced Kenyatta's monthly pay from Sh1.65 million to Sh1.44 million while Ruto's dropped to Sh1.23 million from Sh1.4 million.

Kenyans have taken to social media to express their anger over the move, which comes at a period when the country is experiencing hard economic times.

Mutimba W'Ashene says:" They need to first pay doctors what they owe them."

Sam Gichuki comments:" Do they need more, in all the luxurious environ they live, I wonder!!!!"

Faith Kamau notes:"My country kenya, is it to increase or decrease, this is hell. Remember wanjiku is crying seeing millions of money being looted and she has no food or shelter .Ngai uka tafadhali."

Tiger Trillz asserts: “Welcome to Kenya whereby the mwananchi salary cannot be increased but for the leaders in power increase their salaries whenever they want to a government Kenyan voters have to live with every electioneering period."

Tony Ruhiu writes:"I don't know whether to laugh or cry! Do the two men really need the increase while government services to Kenyans have gone through the floor as cost of living has shot up through the roof?!!"
