Governor Waiguru on the Spot as Pathetic State of Kirinyaga County's Largest Hospital is Exposed [VIDEO]
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru is on the spot after a local television station exposed the pathetic state of the Kerugoya County Referral Hospital.
Kerugoya Referral Hospital is the largest medical facility in the county.
On Saturday, Citizen TV aired an expose revealing the sorry state of the facility featuring blocked toilets, unwashed linen, rotting garbage, and undisposed medical waste.
Water shortage at the facility has also worsened the situation, exposing patients and staff to infections.
Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) Kirinyaga County Chairperson Paul Mwangi says that two nurses at the facility have already been diagnosed with Hepatitis B.
"There are several nurses who are experiencing diarrhea. Last week, two nurses were diagnosed with Hepatitis B," he told Citizen TV.
The situation was reportedly occasioned by the laying off of more than 200 casual workers, including cleaners at the facility.
Mwangi fears of a cholera outbreak if the situation is not addressed immediately.
Residents who spoke to Citizen TV want health services reverted back to the national government since the county has failed to deliver.
Kenyans have taken to social media to criticize Governor Waiguru over the hospital's condition.
David Ngure asks "How can a referral hospital be in this condition? It has to be closed immediately. Anne Waiguru must channel all resources, including her time to clean up the facility."
Yusuf Mukash says: "This is totally unacceptable! Madam Anne Waiguru, what work are you doing? You are sleeping on the job."
Maraga Maangi posts: "This shows the high level of rot in Kirinyaga County. The governor should explain how the referral hospital is in such kind of condition."
