Lawyer Assa Nyakundi Re-Arrested, to be Charged with Murder of 29-Year-Old Son

John Wanjohi Jun 20, 2019

Nairobi lawyer Assa Nyakundi, who is accused of killing his son Joseph Bogonko, was re-arrested on Wednesday.

Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti said the lawyer will be charged afresh with murder.

“He is in custody and will be in court for a murder charge,” Kinoti told Capital FM News.

Nyakundi was initially charged with manslaughter but Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji applied for a review of the case with a view of pressing murder charges against him.

The accused was out on a cash bail of Sh300,000 and a surety of Sh1 million. He was freed after denying the charges.

Kinoti interdicted two DCI officers handling the case for allegedly subverting justice. The two were accused of bungling investigations in a bid to have lawyer Nyakundi face lesser charges.

Nyakundi is reported to have shot his 29-year-old son Joseph Bogonko on March 17th, 2019.

Nyakundi told police officers that he was trying to safeguard his firearm while in the car when he accidentally shot his son in the chest.

However, an autopsy report carried out on the body of Bogonko indicated that the deceased was shot from outside the vehicle.

“The angle of shooting according to the projection could be ninety degrees, suggesting there was a confrontation,” the report read.
