10 MPs Who Did Not Speak in Parliament for 15 Months - Report
A new report has listed 10 Members of Parliament who failed to make any contributions in the National Assembly in the period between September 2017 to December 2018.
The report was released on Sunday by Mzalendo Trust, an organization that has been monitoring MPs' scorecard in Parliament since 2014.
The 10 MPs who did not contribute in any motion in the 15-month period include Emgwen MP Alex Kosgey, Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Charles Kamuren (Baringo South), Samuel Arama (Nakuru Town West), James Githua Wamacukuru (Kabete), Justus Kizito (Shinyalu), Alfred Sambu (Webuye East), and Joshua Adama (Nyakach).
The report ranked Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa, Joseph Kirui Limo (Kipkelion East) and Robert Pukose (Endebess) as some of the best performing MPs in the House.
Among nominated MPs,
David Sankok, Jacqueline Adhiambo Oduol, and Godfrey Osotsi were the most active. Most active nominated Senators included Abshiro Halake, Mary Yiane Senata and Gertrude Musuve Inama.
Five out of the 47 women representatives including Anab Mohamed (Garissa), Lilian Tomitom (West Pokot), Irene Kasalu (Kitui), Jane Wanjuki (Embu) and Jane Chebaibai (Elgeyo Marakwet) did not contribute in any motion during the period.
Sabina Chege (Murang’a), Gladys Boss Shollei (Uasin Gishu) and Gladys Atieno Nyasuna (Homa Bay) were listed as the best performing Women Representatives.
The best-performing Senators were Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi), Mutula Kilonzo Junior (Makueni) and Moses Wetangula (Bungoma) while Anwar Loitiptip (Lamu), Issa Juma Boy (Kwale) and Gideon Moi (Baringo) came last.
“What’s interesting about the results is that some of these silent MPs in the House are the most vocal politicians outside the house,” said Caroline Gaita, the Executive Director for Mzalendo Trust.
“The Country faced many challenges in the period under review and this begs the question why some members of parliament, including those from areas affected, say by floods, drought and insecurity would not raise the issues in the house.”
