Retired President Moi Demands Apology from Daily Nation over Land Article

John Wanjohi Jul 03, 2019

Retired President Daniel Arap Moi has written to Nation Media Group demanding an apology over an article published in Daily Nation on July 1st.

The article appearing on the newspaper's cover page was titled 'How Uchumi bought Army land from Moi.'

The writer of the piece claimed that Moi acquired a 20-acre parcel of land in Nairobi under a company that was yet to be registered and sold it to State-owned Uchumi Supermarket.

Through his lawyer James Ochieng, Moi has asked the media house to issue an apology and withdraw the article within seven days.

The article claimed that Moi colluded with his aide Joshua Kulei to illegally acquire the land in Roysambu in 1992 before selling it to Uchumi.

In a letter to Nation, Ochieng said the article, which is said is false, injured Moi's reputation as a former President, statesman, and businessman.

“The publication thereof has injured our client in his character and reputation as a retired President and holder of public office, statesman and legitimate individual with business concerns both in and outside Kenya,” the letter read in part.

It added: “Our instructions are to demand, which we hereby do, your unequivocal admission of liability for defamation arising from the said publication as well as suitable and fitting apology to be approved by us and given much prominence as the defamatory publication in the next issue of your publication and full retraction of the text and tenor of the offending article."
