Senators Want Nyayo Stadium Renamed after Football Legend Joe Kadenge

Senators have called for the renaming of Nairobi's Nyayo National Stadium to Joe Kadenge Stadium in honor of the legendary footballer who died on Sunday.

While eulogizing him during a parliamentary session, Senators said Kadenge was a true national hero who deserves to be immortalized.

Led by Minority Leader James Orengo, the leaders said the country’s second biggest sporting facility must be renamed after Kadenge, who they described as Kenya's greatest footballer of all time.

Senators Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi), Moses Wetang’ula (Bungoma), George Khaniri (Vihiga ), Getrude Msuruve (nominated) among others seconded the move.

Senator Khaniri said a law must be passed to dictate how all national heroes are honored in future.

“Any good dribbler in Kenyan football was referred to as Kadenge. His dribbling skills brought fame to Kenyan football,” Senator Wetang’ula said.

Senator Sakaja noted: “Kadenge has left a vacuum that will be hard to fill. Renaming Nyayo Stadium after him will go along way to immortalize the man who is easily the best Kenyan footballer of all time.”

Kadenge, 84, passed away while undergoing treatment at Meridian Hospital in Nairobi.
