‘I’m too Rich to Steal’: Machakos Governor Mutua Says, Discloses Source of His Wealth
Governor Alfred Mutua has told off a section of Machakos leaders calling for his investigation over alleged embezzlement of funds from county government coffers.
A group of leaders led by former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama and current Senator Boniface Kabaka urged Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to probe Governor Mutua for allegedly siphoning millions of shillings of taxpayers’ cash.
Responding to the leaders, Governor Mutua said he is too rich to steal public funds, pointing out that he is ready to be investigated and prosecuted if found to have engaged in corrupt dealings.
"All these allegations started with Muthama ... that I bought vehicles ... these people are thick ... I bought vehicles at a low price just to be able to purchase ambulances.”
"If I am found guilty, please arrest me, but let them be careful what they wish for as they also have questions to answer," said Mutua.
Mutua explained that he began making money when he was still a teenager and does not need to steal since he is wealthy enough. He noted that he has investments abroad, apartments in Nairobi, a five-star hotel in Machakos and an aviation company among others.
"I started my own company at the age of 19 ... I formed a company then left the country. When I came back I started TV show Cobra Squad, whose first series earned me Sh25million and the next one Sh11million," said Mutua.
