Kenya’s Youngest MP John Paul Mwirigi Finally Graduates with Education Degree from MKU
Igembe South MP John Paul Mwirigi, who made history as Kenya’s youngest ever elected MP during the 2017 elections, has finally acquired his undergraduate degree.
Mwirigi, 25, graduated with a Bachelor’s of Education degree from Mount Kenya University (MKU) on Friday.
News about MP Mwirigi’s graduation was shared on social media by his friend, Kenyan comedian MC Jessy, who posted a photo of the politician in a gown.
Jessy wrote: “Congratulations Hon. John Paul, Member of Parliament Igembe South on your graduation today. My humble friend, May your light keep on shining. Meru County is proud of your achievements.”
Mwirigi won the Igembe South parliamentary seat on an independent ticket after garnering 19,980 votes ahead of Jubilee's Rufus Miriti, who got 16,615 votes. He was a second-year student at the time of his election.
Mwirigi, an orphan, campaigned on foot due to lack of funds and managed to trounce his opponents, who had millions of shillings at their disposal.
"We decided to elect him. He had no money for campaigns but he offered good pledges and his manifesto was good," a resident said at the time.
Other candidates he defeated included Mzalendo Mwenda (PNU), Mutuma Kubai of Maendeleo Chap Chap and Raphael Murigi of the Democratic Party.
