Nyeri Deputy Speaker in Trouble After He Was Videotaped Beating Up a Man
Nyeri Deputy Speaker Samuel Kariuki is set to be arrested after he was filmed beating up a young man at Giakanja Boys Secondary School in Nyeri on Sunday.
Kariuki, who is also the MCA for Ruring’u Ward, assaulted the man during a fight between two political rival groups ahead of a fundraiser graced by Deputy President William Ruto.
The video shows Kariuki, who is allied to a group that supports DP Ruto (Tangatanga), whipping the man with a wooden rod as other locals cheer him on. Kariuki continues to strike him hard even after he falls on the ground.
An arrest warrant has been issued against Kariuki, according to Central Regional Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga. Nyagwanga also said that all those who were involved in the fracas will be arrested and charged.
Police officers were forced to lob teargas canisters to disperse the youth while at least 10 people were arrested during the chaos which erupted ahead of a fundraiser where DP Ruto was the chief guest. The fight was allegedly between supporters of Ruto and those of Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu.
