Babu Owino to be Charged with Attempted Murder

John Wanjohi Jan 19, 2020

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is set to be presented in court on Monday to face charges over the shooting of a Disk Jockey on Friday.

Babu, who was arrested on Friday morning for allegedly shooting Felix Orinda, aka DJ Evolve, on the neck at B-Club in Nairobi’s Kilimani area, spent the weekend at Gigiri Police Station where he was moved on Saturday after initially being booked at Kilimani Police Station.

Babu was arrested on Friday morning at Nairobi Hospital, where he had allegedly gone to visit the victim after the 7 am shooting incident. Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) head George Kinoti indicated that Babu will be charged with attempted murder.

“It is apparent that he wanted to kill the man,” Kinoti said.

On Saturday, detectives took Babu to his Kileleshwa home, where they found ammunition after a search, according to his lawyer Cliff Ombeta. Police had earlier confiscated his gun and a spent cartridge and also carried out a DNA test to firm up the case against Babu.

“We then went to Kilimani Police Station, where a statement was recorded on the fresh findings of the search before we proceeded to the Government Chemist for a DNA test,” Ombeta said on Saturday.

He added: “Charges are hard to determine since the victim is still in the hospital. The status of the patient will play a key role in preferring charges, whether assault, grievous harm, attempted murder or misuse of a firearm.”

DJ Evolve underwent emergency surgery at Nairobi Hospital to remove the bullet that was lodged in his neck and a second operation to remove a blood clot.
