Unable to Board any Flight to Kenya from Europe, Miguna Miguna Returns to Canada

Irungu Thairu Jan 21, 2020

Miguna Miguna on Tuesday returned to Canada, over two weeks after he left Canada for a trip to Kenya.

Miguna arrived in Berlin, Germany on January 5th and got ready to board a Lufthansa connecting flight to Nairobi but the airline said the Kenyan government had a red alert preventing the airline from flying him to Kenya or any other African country. He later tried to board an Air France flight but fell on the same fate.

The Kenyan government says Miguna is a citizen of Canada and lost his Kenyan citizenship after he became a naturalized Canadian, and having done so under the old Constitution, the law requires him to re-apply for Kenyan citizenship. Miguna has refused to do so, saying he is Kenyan by birthright.

Miguna was deported from Kenya in February, 2018 after he participated in the mock swearing-in of ODM leader Raila Odinga as “the people’s president.” The government also took away a Kenyan passport Miguna used, saying it had been acquired illegally since he was not a Kenyan citizen.

On Tuesday through Twitter, Miguna said he is returning to Canada but will not give up his struggle to visit Kenya. “ I've no option but to return to exile in Canada. I'll not surrender. The struggle continues. Viva!,” wrote Miguna.
