Mwangi Kiunjuri Forms New Political Party After Being Sacked from Cabinet

John Wanjohi Jan 25, 2020

Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has reportedly registered a new political party barely two weeks after he was fired from Cabinet.

He was shown the door by President Kenyatta during a mini Cabinet reshuffle announced on January 14th and was replaced by former Meru County Governor Peter Munya.

Kiunjuri, a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto, allegedly formed a new political outfit dubbed The Service Party, which is now in the final stages of registration, according to media reports. Prior to joining Cabinet in 2015, Kiunjuri was the leader of the Grand National Party (GNU), which has since been dissolved.

In a press briefing in Nairobi hours after he was dismissed from Cabinet, Kiunjuri hinted at making a comeback in politics, with political analysts predicting he might join hands with DP Ruto ahead of 2022 general elections.

“With my experience spanning over 25 years, I have a lot to offer. I would continue to serve this country, faithfully in other capacities. Make no mistake; I am not going anywhere. I will be with you around,” said Kuinjuri during a media briefing at Serena Hotel.

He added: “The President’s decision has taken me by no surprise; I thank God, I feel relieved. I have endured lots of humiliation; only God and my family know this. I have given my best in my assignment; I leave with my head high.”
