Moi to be Laid to Rest on Wednesday in Nakuru County
The late former President Daniel Arap Moi will be laid to rest at his home in Kabarak, Nakuru County on Wednesday, February 12th, his family said on Wednesday.
There will be a state funeral service at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi on Tuesday, according to Tiaty MP William Kamket, a member of the funeral committee.
Speaking on Wednesday, Kabarak University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Henry Kiplangat indicated that another funeral service will be held on 12th February at the university’s grounds before the former president’s final sendoff. Members of the public will have an opportunity to view his body for three days - Saturday to Monday.
Moi passed away on Tuesday morning after a three-month stay at Nairobi Hospital where he was under the care of health specialists.
While announcing Moi’s demise on Tuesday, President Kenyatta said the country’s second president will be accorded a state funeral, with all appropriate civilian and full military honors being observed. He further directed that flags be flown at half-mast from Tuesday until sunset on the day of Moi’s burial.
“Under the authority vested in me as the President of the Republic of Kenya and the Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, do hereby order and direct that in testimony of the respect in which the memory of the Late Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi is held, the nation will observe a period of National mourning from today until the day of his funeral,” said Kenyatta.
Moi, 95, leaves behind seven children. His first-born son Jonathan Moi, 66, succumbed to cancer in April 2019.
