Moi's Body to Lie in State in Parliament for Three Days
The body of the late retired President Daniel Arap Moi will lie in state in Parliament for three days ahead of his burial on Wednesday, February 12th, the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua has announced.
Addressing the media at Harambee House in Nairobi on Thursday, Kinyua said Moi’s remains will lie in state in Parliament on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Kinyua added that there will be a state funeral on Tuesday, February 11th, followed by a state burial in Kabarak, Nakuru County on Wednesday.
President Uhuru, who is currently on a tour to the United States, is expected to fly back on Friday night and lead Kenyans in paying their last respects to the former president.
“To allow our nation to reflect on President Moi’s momentous role and achievements and accord all Kenyans the opportunity to participate in public viewing and paying of last respects to the former head of state and government, the body of the President shall lie in state in Parliament from Saturday, 8th February to Monday…,” said Kinyua.
“His excellency Uhuru Kenyatta will on Saturday lead the nation in viewing of the body of the former president as well as the paying of last respects. The Head of State is expected to arrive at Parliament buildings at 10:15 am…”
He said the body will leave Lee Funeral Home on Saturday at 8:15 am and will be conveyed to Parliament buildings with the casket being covered in the national flag and escorted by family members.
“The solemn procession will go through Valley Road, Kenyatta Road through to Parliament Way. A military guard of honor will be mounted on Parliament road for the entry procession to Parliament.”
Moi, 95, succumbed to a long illness on Tuesday morning at the Nairobi Hospital, where he was under the care of specialists for close to four months.
