Thousands of Kenyans Queue to View Moi’s Body at Parliament

Thousands of Kenyans on Saturday queued at Parliament buildings to view the body of former president Daniel Arap Moi.

Moi’s remains were on Saturday morning moved from Lee Funeral Home to Parliament, where they will lie in state for three days ahead of the scheduled state burial on next Wednesday.

The casket carrying the body of Moi was ferried on a gun carriage and pulled by a military truck. It was draped with the Kenyan flag and escorted by a contingent of military men.

During the three days, members of the public will be allowed into Parliament buildings from 8 am to 5 pm to pay their respects to Kenya’s second president.

President Kenyatta, who returned to the country from a trip to the United States on Friday, led Kenyans in paying their last respects to the former president at Parliament grounds on Saturday morning. Uhuru and First Lady Margaret Kenyatta were the first people to view the body at 10.15 am.

They were then followed by Deputy President William Ruto and other dignitaries before members of the public were allowed to view. Kenyans will on Tuesday observe a public holiday ahead of Moi’s state funeral on Wednesday, February 12th.

Moi, who ruled the country for 24 years, succumbed to a long illness at the Nairobi Hospital on Tuesday. He will be accorded a state funeral, with all appropriate civilian and full military honors being observed.

He will be laid to rest at his rural home in Kabarak, Nakuru County.
