Kenya’s Second President Daniel Arap Moi Finally Laid to Rest

Kenya’s second president Daniel Arap Moi was on Wednesday finally laid to rest at his home in Kabarak, Nakuru County.

The casket containing Moi’s remains was lowered to the grave at around 5 pm with the former president being accorded a 19-gun salute. Military jets also flew over Kabarak in aerial salute referred to as missing wingman formation in honor of Moi, who ruled Kenya for 24 years.

Moi, who passed away at the Nairobi Hospital on February 4th aged 95, was buried next to his wife Lena who died in 2004.

A funeral service attended by thousands of Kenyans from different parts of the country was held earlier at the Kabarak University grounds. President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga, Deputy President William Ruto, ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka were among the top politicians who attended the burial.

“I’m here to bid farewell to a father whose love I saw and felt,” said President Kenyatta.

DP Ruto said: “We are sending off an icon, a statesman. For those of us who knew him when he was about to retire, we became his lastborns in politics.”

Raila noted: “We hated one another at some point, but Moi looked for me. I came here, we held a long discussion ate meat and forgave one another before we shook hands and that is where the first handshake happened.”
