Beyond Zero Half Marathon: Uhuru Runs 2.6-Kilometer Race
President Uhuru on Sunday took part in the 5th edition of the Beyond Zero Half Marathon, an initiative of First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.
Donning a white t-shirt and blue jeans, Kenyatta led other leaders in a 2.6-kilometer race and was received by Margret on the finish line at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.
He was joined by Governors Mike Sonko (Nairobi) and Alfred Mutua (Machakos) as wells as Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Other leaders who participated in the race included Cabinet Secretaries Amina Mohamed (Sports), Mutahi Kagwe (Health), Betty Maina (Trade) and Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang.
Several roads in the city including Mombasa road, Lusaka, Haile Selassie, Kenyatta Avenue, University Way, and Waiyaki Way were closed during the race.
In a statement, State House said the 2019 edition of Beyond Zero half marathon will support the advocacy around nine key health issues affecting Kenyans including zero maternal deaths, zero child deaths, a healthy lifestyle for the elderly, zero new HIV infections and zero child marriages.
Others are zero Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), early screening for cancer, the inclusion of persons with disability and better nutrition for all children.
Vincent Kipchumba won the men’s half marathon title while Lilian Njeri won the women’s race.
